Experiential education for grades 6-12 in St. Louis

8th Grade Camp Wyman Overnight

8th Grade Camp Wyman Overnight

On May 15–16, Whitfield’s 8th graders traveled to Camp Wyman for a two-day overnight experience filled with nature exploration, peer bonding, and leadership development. Set in the wooded hills of Eureka, Missouri, the program offered students the chance to reflect on their middle school journey and prepare for the transition to Upper School.

Guided by Whitfield faculty and supported by a dedicated team of senior counselors, students participated in a variety of experiential activities including hiking, outdoor games, orienteering, cabin group challenges, and BASE Camp reflections. The trip began with a Forest Exploration Scavenger Hunt and included structured activity periods where students chose from hiking trails, team sports, indoor puzzles, or peaceful time in nature.

A highlight of the experience was the student-led panel, where seniors shared candid insights about life in Upper School and offered thoughtful advice to the rising 9th graders. That evening, students gathered at the Council Ring for a reflective bonfire discussion. After enjoying s’mores and stories, students read heartfelt letters from their families—an emotional and memorable tradition that marks the end of their middle school years.

A special thank you to our senior leaders, who brought energy, empathy, and wisdom to every aspect of the trip. From leading hikes and games to offering honest reflections and late-night encouragement, these students were exceptional role models. Their presence made a lasting impression—and reminded us all what it means to lead with kindness and purpose.
