Rising senior Jack Lynch ’26 has earned national recognition for a creative physics project that combined two of his passions—fishing and video production. His video, “Eyes on the Water: How Bass and Bluegill Vision Can Lead to Sustainable Fishing,” won first place in the Science in Your World category of the National Eye Institute’s Eye on the Future teen video contest.

Originally submitted as a final project for his physics class at The Whitfield School, Jack’s video stood out among more than 120 entries from students in grades 9–12 across the country. The competition, now in its fourth year, challenges students to explore how science relates to their everyday lives. In addition to national recognition and a $2,000 prize, Jack’s story was featured by NPR.

Jack began editing videos at age 12 and describes video production as its own kind of science. “In a program like After Effects, you open the application and it looks like a plane cockpit,” he told NPR. “It takes a while to learn the science and the details behind, you know, how do I use this?”

Jack's award-winning project illustrates the kind of interdisciplinary learning that defines the Whitfield experience. He plans to apply for internships in the film industry and is exploring colleges with strong video production programs.
