Experiential education for grades 6-12 in St. Louis

Whitfield Students Recognized for Excellence in American Mathematics Competitions (AMC)

Whitfield Students Recognized for Excellence in American Mathematics Competitions (AMC)

On Tuesday, April 22, 2025, The Whitfield School recognized three students for their outstanding performance in this year’s American Mathematics Competitions (AMC). During an all-school assembly, Math Department Chair Patrick O’Connor presented certificates to the top scorers in each division.

The American Mathematics Competition is an exam designed to spur interest in mathematics and develop problem-solving abilities through the excitement of competition. Students who participate in this timed test tackle problems that are challenging and often require thinking “outside of the box.” Students in grades 6–8 take the AMC 8, students in grades 9–10 take the AMC 10, and students in grades 11–12 take the AMC 12.

In previous years, Whitfield’s highest scorers were recognized at Awards Day in May. Beginning this year, and moving forward, the Math Department has shifted this recognition to an all-school assembly to celebrate these students more broadly. In addition to a certificate, each student received a Numworks calculator as a token of appreciation from the department—and as inspiration to continue pushing themselves in their mathematical studies.

This year’s top performers were:

  • AMC 8: Luke Thompson

  • AMC 10: Gabi Gutierrez

  • AMC 12: Juhi Roy

Congratulations to Luke, Gabi, and Juhi for this well-earned recognition of their mathematical excellence.
