Gigi Florek '19 Earns Girl Scout Gold Award
Gigi Florek ’19 recently earned the Girl Scout Gold Award demonstrating extraordinary leadership through a remarkable community service project. Open only to girls in high school, Gold Award recipients are recognized for making a difference the worlds of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), education, and legislation.
As a member of the Minor Threat Roller Derby Junior team, Gigi knew she wanted to create a permanent and positive change for her teammates—and in the sporting community itself. To earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, this G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)TM spent more than 80 hours researching and constructing a communication tool that can be utilized by athletes with a chronic illness.
Gigi’s patent-pending Blue’s Band is an armband with two different colors that serve as a signal system to coaches. One of the colors means ‘all is well’ and the other side signals a problem and ‘I need to take it easy.’ Team members wearing this armband can then quickly and discreetly communicate their status to their coaches. Gigi, a student at Drury University, plans to establish a nonprofit with the sole purpose of ensuring injury prevention through the Blue’s Band. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri
