Hurling into Habits: Sophomores Snowball Their Way to Success

Habits Experiences are a dimension of the advisory Habits Curriculum where students have the opportunity to participate in practical, hands-on activities that translate the values inherent in the Habits of Mind and Heart into meaningful practice.

Sophomores gathered as a grade level this week and had a "snowball" fight using crumpled papers, on which they had written questions and fears about their sophomore year. This lighthearted activity allowed them to share concerns in a low-stakes way while 10th-grade teachers addressed these questions, fostering both connection and support among students and teachers. They practiced Citizenship by actively participating in the exercise and listening to one another’s concerns, fostering a respectful and supportive community. At the same time, they applied the habit of Scholarship by asking thoughtful questions about the academic challenges they anticipated in their sophomore year.

This combination of community-building and academic inquiry allowed students to internalize the habits in a real-world context, connecting the curriculum to their daily experiences. The session ended with a hula hoop competition between advisories, fostering teamwork and effective communication among peers.
