Whitfield Hosts S.L.A.C.K.E.R.s

On January 24th, Upper School science teacher Jaclyn Yetter hosted S.L.A.C.K.E.R.s  (St. Louis Area Chemistry Knowledge Educational Resource Sharers) group. Eight teachers from area schools (Whitfield, JBS, MICDS, SLUH, Rosati-Kain, Clayton, and Kirkwood) gathered to discuss chemistry and practice for the upcoming, redesigned Battle of the Burets competition in Spring 2024.

Organizers recently redesigned the competition to be accessible at each school rather than requiring students and teachers to travel to one location in order to participate. The competition involves using the technique of titration to standardize a solution and to analyze an unknown potassium hydrogen phthalate. This competition will be available to first-year HS chem students as well as AP Chem students.

Our group meets about once a month and the topic changes each meeting. Schools volunteer to host the event. So far this school year, we've met at SLUH, MICDS, & Whitfield. The next meeting is February 28th at Clayton HS to discuss the role of textbooks in the chemistry classroom in addition to the importance of electrolysis in today's society, and how to incorporate it into our curricula.
