UPPER SCHOOL: EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO THRIVE

The Upper School at Whitfield is a dynamic environment where students continue to discover and develop their passions, explore leadership opportunities, and build the skills they need to succeed in college and beyond. With a focus on experiential learning, the Upper School provides countless opportunities for students to apply knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IS EXPERIENTIAL

Whitfield’s academic program is intentionally designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Students engage deeply with their subjects through interdisciplinary projects and hands-on experiences that bring learning to life. For example:

  • The Story of America Project: Juniors collaborate across English and Social Studies to create documentary films that explore historical narratives.
  • Kinetic Sculptures: Science students merge engineering and artistry to build functioning kinetic sculptures.
  • Artistic Portfolios: Visual Arts students showcase their talent through campus exhibitions that highlight their creative growth.

To graduate, students complete a rigorous curriculum that includes four years of English, Social Studies, Math, and Science; three years of a World Language; and one year each of Fine Arts and Physical Education. Advisory classes, integral to the program, ensure students develop essential life skills and build lasting relationships with peers and faculty.

HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT

The Upper School years are marked by personal growth and discovery, and Whitfield’s intentional structures ensure students are supported every step of the way. The advisory program evolves with students, helping them strengthen their social-emotional skills and habits of mind and heart.

Monthly department meetings and professional development days allow faculty to refine curriculum, ensuring it is cohesive, forward-thinking, and aligned with experiential learning principles. Departments like Computer Science and World Languages continually innovate—whether by forging partnerships in St. Louis or designing cultural immersion trips.

CO-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES

At Whitfield, learning extends well beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to immerse themselves in co-curricular activities that foster teamwork, creativity, and resilience. Whether on stage, on the field, or in the community, they are supported by caring and dedicated faculty.

  • Athletics: Whitfield’s inclusive, no-cut philosophy ensures every student can participate while also competing at a high level in local and state-wide events.
  • The Arts: Students shine in theater productions, band and choir concerts, and art exhibitions that celebrate their creativity.
  • Clubs and Affinity Groups: With student-driven clubs and identity-based affinity groups, students explore their passions and connect meaningfully with others.

BUILDING COMMUNITY, FOSTERING LEADERSHIP

Whitfield’s Upper School emphasizes leadership and community engagement, recognizing these as essential for lifelong success. Assemblies, Homecoming Spirit Week, and community service initiatives bring students together, while the school’s Greenslip system and advisory program ensure consistent communication and mentorship.

By the time students graduate, they leave Whitfield with the confidence, resilience, and skills to thrive in their next chapter. More importantly, they carry with them the knowledge that their achievements are rooted in integrity, curiosity, and purpose—values cultivated
within Whitfield’s supportive community.
