Tim Wright '94

Tim transferred to Whitfield as a sophomore and graduated in 1994. In addition to owning and managing his own construction company, Wright 11 located in Los Angeles, California, he is currently enrolled at Pepperdine University where he is working on a BSM and an MBA. His sister also attended Whitfield before the family moved to Colorado.

“Whitfield offered me an opportunity to become the best version of myself in my own time. Whitfield created opportunities for me to have my own experiences and, most importantly, to learn from those experiences.”

How did Whitfield prepare you for college and beyond?

There are a lot of things that Whitfield offered me. However, there is one thing that benefited me most in my adult life: my junior year English teacher had the greatest impact on me personally and professionally. Since around the age of 24, there is not a day that goes by that I have not been consciously aware of his role in my life. His defined expectations, for not only what was required in class, but what would be expected from students in both their future academic and business careers, was clear and precise every day. He set standards in excellence, and I wanted to achieve them. My developed life skills of fortitude, effective communication, and being able to articulate my thoughts in a clear and concise way are directly atributed to my junior year English teacher.

What are some of your favorite Whitfield memories?

For me, most of my favorite memories involve the classroom. I didn’t expect that, coming out of my freshman year at a local religious school. And even though I created great relationship with other Whitfield students, the teachers made the greatest impact on me. In short, they were present in each student’s life; they are more present than most college professors.

What opportunities did Whitfield provide you that you might not have had elsewhere?

Whitfield offered me an opportunity to become the best version of myself in my own time. Whitfield created opportunities for me to have my own experiences and, most importantly, learn from those experiences.

What skills do you use in your career that you began forming at Whitfield?

I use the writing and communication skills I cultivated at Whitfield regularly in my daily life. Owning my own business, writing contracts every day and creating schedules for employees has made me aware of Whitfield’s impact. In addition, Whitfield created an environment in which my confidence grew, and the community-focused learning environment helped me cultivate my relationship-building skills which are so important in my life today.

Describe your career path.

My career journey started right out of high school. I took the road less traveled, so to speak. I got into home building and cabinet making with a 5-year stint at UPS developing my managerial skills.  I currently own my own construction firm in Los Angeles. Recently, I decided it was finally time to go back to school. My business has offered me a significant opportunity to grow both professionally and personally. At this time in my life the value of education has become even more clear. There are things I just don’t know. Business school is offering me the opportunity to connect the dots between real world experiences and book knowledge. I cannot wait to develop my business as a result.
