Whitfield’s Spring Musical, “Hairspray,” opens April 27 and runs through April 30.

Set in 1960s Baltimore, this dynamic show tells the story of dance-loving teen Tracy Turnblad who auditions for a spot on “The Corny Collins Show” and wins. She becomes an overnight sensation and using her new-found fame, Tracy advocates to bring racial integration to the show. Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, “Hairspray” continues to be one of the most widely-produced musicals today.

According to Director of Productions Amy Allen Cano, Whitfield students have been asking to do this show for years. “For the kids, this show is about teenagers affecting positive change in society by bringing people together,” said Allen Cano. “They feel deeply about doing it. In fact, we had more kids audition for this show than we’ve had in years – 25% of the high school. The cast is creating a rockin’ and ridiculously funny show that the audience should thoroughly enjoy.”
