Celebrating Computer Science Week
Posted 12/13/2017 03:45PM

Whitfield students and faculty enjoyed a week of interactive technology experiences to celebrate International Computer Science Week held December 4-8, 2017.

Our technology department invited a variety of vendors to campus to host activities throughout the week that showcased new and emerging technology. Microsoft and Tierney Brothers Technology provided a Mixed Reality experience, students explored the new world of Augmented Reality, dissected animals and items with zSpace, and stepped into the immersive world of Virtual Reality from Microsoft. Representatives from Bloxels showed students how to design their own video games and Nearpod showcased their interactive classroom tool for teachers.

“We wanted our students and teachers to try out the latest technology and provide us with authentic feedback about the products,” said Lisa Barry Jenkins, assistant director of technology. “The possibilities are truly endless with using these new tools across the curriculum. Think how amazing it could be to visit the Globe Theater when reading one of Shakespeare’s plays, or utilizing an Augmented Reality tool to see inside Tombs of Egypt, or to visit a battlefield.”

According to Barry Jenkins, the technology showcased is both affordable and realistic for Whitfield students and teachers to begin using now. “With our current technology platform and our Microsoft Surface Pro computers, our students and teachers can start utilizing these tools in the classroom right away—we don’t have to wait until ‘someday’.”
