Friday evening ended on a high note at Whitfield School as both the girls' and boys' varsity basketball teams celebrated victories in the District tournament.
GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL
The girls' team (18-8) captured the Class 3, District 5 championship after scoring the first 16 points of the second half to finish with a 46-34 victory over Principia. This victory gave Whitfield its first-ever District Title.
The victory also capped quite a week for the Warriors. A No. 5 seed, Whitfield beat No. 4 Lutheran North 49-34 and then upended top-seeded Lutheran-St. Charles 53-41 to earn a spot against third-seeded Principia (17-9).
Junior Tyler Ituen keyed the big third quarter, scoring 12 of her game-high 16 points in that key 16-0 run. Senior Destini Wilson added 14 points.
BOYS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL
The celebration continued as the boys' team (17-12) completed the sweep, capturing the Class 3, District 5 title.
Whitfield and Trinity battled a close game throughout the first and second halves However, late in the fourth quarter, Trinity led by three. A foul gave them the opportunity to increase their lead, but they came up short, allowing Whitfield to grab the rebound and take three from the top of the key to tie the game. Fans were out of their seats as Trinity held out for a last-second shot, but missed. Maurice Burns grabbed the defensive rebound and fired a long pass to Zach Ellis. Ellis was fouled and sent to the free-throw line with 0.4 seconds remaining, where he sunk two shots to put the Warriors up by two and a 53-51 win. Junior Julian Johnson scored 21 and freshman Zach Ellis added 12 for the top-seeded Warriors.
Both teams will play Bowling Green in the Sectionals on Wednesday, March 11, at St. Charles West High School. St. Charles West is Located at 3601 Droste Road, St. Charles, Mo. The boys will play at 6:00 p.m. and the girls will play at 7:45.
