Parent Programs

Parents play a crucial role in the college process, and the Whitfield college counseling team understands the importance of keeping parents informed and involved. When individual college counseling begins in the junior year, we find that the best formula for success is for the student to take the lead with counselor and parents there to support and encourage. When this dynamic is balanced, the student and parents are most likely to achieve their goals in the college process.

To that end, we also work with parents through a variety of programs to provide them with the appropriate resources that allow them to develop effective strategies in working with their children in this important next step of their lives.

Education is key. From book club discussions related to college admission to college coffees, lunches, and evening receptions, we provide a variety of forums through which our parents can glean the information they need to support their children.

Family Connection is Whitfield's online college counseling tool that provides additional assistance to our families as they work with their college counselors during the college search process.  Students and parents can research individual colleges, find admission criteria, manage their college applications, research, be matched with potential career choices, and much more. Family Connection is available to high school students and parents.

In the junior and senior years, parents and students attend college planning workshops that address their questions and concerns, from testing and researching schools, to completing applications and making a final decision.

Financial planning for college is increasingly important for families.  We provide advice and information on pursuing honorary scholarships as well as need-based financial aid.

As students head to college, students and parents are encouraged to attend a "transition to college" program in the spring at which a local expert, a Whitfield alumni parent, and a Whitfield alumnus address questions and offer their advice about the transition to college.

As always, we welcome families' questions at any point during their time at Whitfield.
