Mark Anderson

Mark Anderson came to Whitfield in 1998 as an English teacher. His professional versatility and enthusiasm for serving the School community were evident in the wide variety of roles he adopted during the years that followed. Whether as dean of faculty, dean of students, admission associate, summer camps director, teacher, or coach; Anderson applied Whitfield’s student-centered approach to each endeavor.

In 2004, he succeeded Mary L. Burke as head of school. Recognizing Whitfield as a community of leaders, Anderson developed his own leadership style to be inclusive, empowering of others, and supportive of risk-taking. His seven-year tenure as head resulted in many tangible successes, such as increasing the endowment, reducing the debt, providing adequate parking, and dramatically improving the baseball facility. In 2011, Anderson accepted the head of school position at Sanford School in Hockessin, Delaware.
